Brandon Beaver Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Brandon Beaver - Essay Example The impact of the ERG in any firm must be optional, contrasted with the circumstances in the work environment which chiefly characterizes worker feeling towards the corporate administration. Hence, where the hidden working relationship is basically ill-disposed, any administration supported ERG activity will be seen with doubt as a ploy by the board to exploit the representatives (Ashton and Sung, 2002). The post’s distinguishing proof of potential downsides to the ERG is keen. Since the ERG, so as to be viable, will in general spotlight on specific minority gatherings or their particular circumstances, their individuals will in general stand apart more unmistakably instead of mix in with the dominant part. This is, I think, the Catch 22 of most decent variety and incorporation endeavors. The push to all the more successfully make consideration will in general extend the divisions. The test to the executives is the way to support the production of ERGs in such a way, that repr esentatives come to see the ERG as more firmly related to the requirements and goals of the workers, as opposed to with the wants of the executives. On the off chance that the ERG is recognized more intimately with the executives than it is with the laborers, it might be viewed as simply one more methods for controlling and controlling the work power to follow administrative plans against their better advantages. References Ashton, D N and Sung, J (2002) Supporting Workplace Learning for High Performance Working. Geneva: International Labor Organization Catalyst (2008). Worker asset gatherings: significant to representatives; important to business. www.catalyst.org. Reaction to post of understudy 2: Christopher Gilbert The post makes reference to, surprisingly, the matter of the Chick-Fil-An Appreciation Day. I accept this has small bearing on the matter of assorted variety and consideration in the work environment towards its representatives, or in the company’s dealings wit h its clients and people in general on the loose. The Chick-Fil-An issue was progressively about the consideration working the opposite way around, that of the privilege of an individual to communicate an assessment and the assurance connected to one side. The ERG can't be engaged to direct changes from above, or from outside developments and components that have little importance to what occurs in the working environment. Assorted variety and incorporation includes solidarity of activity and objectives, not really solidarity of convictions and the center standards of people (Herek, 2000). The ERG’s objective is to make ready for resistance and regard for the assorted variety of convictions and assessments that are available in any gathering whenever. There is a distinction among consideration and consistency. Consideration takes into consideration assortment and pleasant conjunction while holding people’s intrinsic uniqueness. Consistency is prejudiced of contrasts, a nd wishes to make a solitary resemblance among individuals, along these lines denying them their uniqueness. The utilization of representative reference gatherings ought to be sure about its destinations, which is to address the assorted variety and incorporation needs of the worker gathering while at the same time keeping up key importance to the firm’s business objectives and targets (Catalyst, 2008). The Chic-Fil-An issue doesn't have anything to do with the acknowledgment of individuals with various sexual directions at the working environment and among shoppers, it is about the policy driven issue of the authorization of same-sex marriage. In fact, ERGs ought to abstain from getting themselves entangled n political challenges since they are disruptive and have small bearing upon the form’s tasks. For ERGs to be compelling as instruments of the association, they should be cautious not

Not All English Majors Want to Be Writers

Not All English Majors Want to Be Writers As an English major, free advice sure makes up for all the money I do not earn. Advice from family, from friends, from concerned neighbours and absolute strangers. “You should get a business degree.” “You should pursue law. Lots of literature people end up as good lawyers.” “You know what? You should go for a PhD and be a teacher… it’s such a stable job.” “So, are you planning to apply to the civil services?” All of these are as annoying as they are useless, because I don’t plan to do any of these things, nor I do not appreciate you making me feel as if my education is somehow incomplete. I did not end up in publishing because none of the above worked out; I don’t edit books because I couldn’t study for law, and I don’t really want a “stable job,” whatever you think that is. I know and acknowledge that the book industry doesn’t pay well, and I could tell you about the reasons behind it. I could tell you about the work of software engineers being more valued than the work of teachers and writers and editors, and what that says about the world we live in. I don’t like that after years of hard work I am doing a job which doesnt pay well, but I’m going to stick to it and see what I can make of it. I’ve become pretty good at nodding politely with slightly-raised eyebrows at people when they start with me about alternate career paths, but there is worse, I have realized. There is also a category of people who think publishing is wonderful and appreciate the work I do… until they reach the just-write-a-book point. “Oh, you should start writing. You can publish a book, and earn so much more!” via GIPHY Writing childrens books couldnt be hard? Youve read so many. I mean, J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter, and now look at her, a billionaire! You could be the next her! You could be dead, sir. Here’s the thing: I do not and cannot, unfortunately, write fiction. You know what I’m good at writing? Posts such as this on the internet, extremely articulate e-mails, academic essays, snarky tweets, and crappy poetry nobody gets to read. Studying literature for 4 years and my love for reading does not mean I am  a creative writer. It makes my blood boil when people suggest I just “write a book.” There is no switch that I can pull which will cause me to sit down and let a book flow from my fingers. Writing is hard, and creative writing is harder. You need Ideas, and I have never woken up to a single idea for a piece of fiction. My degree is not useless because I dont write fiction. Not all books are Harry Potter. Writing a book doesnt automatically make you a millionaire. Not all English majors are born authors. The point of this rant is a PSA that English majors do not appreciate your two cents about their careers, especially if youre going to be condescending about the things were passionate about, the decisions and choices weve consciously made, and the work weve put in to get where we are. I mean, youre a mechanical engineer who makes spreadsheets for a living, are you sure you want to go down that road?

What Does It Mean To Be Human free essay sample

What Does It Mean To Be Human? According to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, â€Å"Part of what it means to be human is how we became human. Over a long period of time, as early humans adapted to a changing world, they evolved certain characteristics that help define our species today. † Some of these characteristics include, walking upright on two feet, larger and more complex brains, and a social life that not every living organism has or can do. Although this is more of a physical take on what makes each person a human, there is also a complete and separate part of the human race that makes us human; and that part is our intellectual being. All our thoughts, feelings, emotions, takes on life, and opinions all go into figuring out who we are, what we live for, and what makes us different from animals, trees, or birds. We will write a custom essay sample on What Does It Mean To Be Human? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Along with the fact each human has their own thoughts and feelings, also means there are different takes on what makes each person human. Who we are can start at, but not limit to how the Bible, Paul Tillich, and Gilgamesh perceive human life and what truly makes us who we are. The Bible is a very old, and very credible source that still holds truth to this day. Through out the book of Genesis, being human is in a very literal sense. It describes in great detail about the features of a human. In Genesis 1:27 God goes to say â€Å"So God created humankind in his own image.. † (The New Oxford Annotated Bible, Genesis 1-12). God then describes the job that each and every human is to do every day, and that includes taking care of the land, animals, and providing for himself. Man was created to serve. Human ambition for the purpose of serving oneself certainly cannot provide anyone with the fulfillment they are seeking. There are many examples of people who became famous and wealthy, only to find there is no fulfillment in personal ambition. (Criswell) Later on in the book, it goes on to say how the snake tempted Adam and Eve into eating fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil â€Å"But the serpant said to the woman, â€Å"You will not die; for God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.† (Genesis 3:4-5). † That caused the two humans to become imperfect and realize their flaws. God also cursed them, the woman would have great pain during childbirth, and man will have to work for all his food, even through all the hardships it brings him. Genesis itself has numerous stories within the one book, another being about a man named Noah. Within his story he builds an arc for his family and 2 of each animal on the earth. God then strikes a flood over the entire earth for forty days and forty nights. After that it tells a story about Cain and Abel. In this story they were both brothers, Abel was a keeper of the sheep, Cain a tiller of the ground. Each brought the Lord an offering, and â€Å"the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry and his countenance fell (Genesis 4:5). † Although each story through out Genesis is very different, and all have many meanings, they all have a common interest within them. It seems that through each story each one of them experiences pain or suffering of some sort. Some of it is short lived, but most of it is pain that will affect someone for a lifetime. Even though God allows pain and suffering to his people, it is not because he is heartless. He is still there for, and protecting his people, but they only way they can truly become human is through mistakes and being punished for those mistakes. The book of Gilgamesh has many similarities and differences to the Bible. The Bible goes into great detail about how human life came about, whereas Gilgamesh makes no mention to it, but both books share many similarities about what makes us human. Gilgamesh is a story about two men who live entirely different lives, but find each other and become best friends. At the beginning of the story each man starts out as a man on the outside, but not entirely on the inside. Gilgamesh was a mean, hard ruler over his people, and Enkidu lived among the wild with the animals. The author placing Enkidu apart of the animals was almost relating the start of human life to evolution and Darwinism. According to the Smithsonian National Museum of National History: Human evolution is the lengthy process of change by which people originated from apelike ancestors. Scientific evidence shows that the physical and behavioral traits shared by all people originated from apelike ancestors and evolved over a period of approximately six million years. It takes a complete opposite side from the Bible, which states God created the heavens, the earth, and all the people within it. In the story Enkidu was said to have lived with the animals, and when he slept with the prostitute and shaved and bathed, he became a man. Soon afterward he realized how much it hurt him because the animals no longer claimed him or considered him family anymore. â€Å"When he rose again looking for his friends who had gone, he felt a strange exhaustion, as if life had left his body. He felt their absence (Mason 18). † Later on in the story, when Gilgamesh and Enkidu were searching for the key to immortality, Enkidu died after fighting off the gods. This is the first day that Gilgamesh lost one of the most important things in his life. He had always gotten what he wanted, and had never experienced pain or suffering before. Along with losing Enkidu, Gilgamesh finds, and loses the flower, which is the key to youth they were looking for on their trip. This also saddens him and is one of the second things he loses in his life. Although it seems the stories between the Bible and Gilgamesh are very different comparing how humans are made, what makes us human is all very much alike. Throughout the entire story of Gilgamesh, Enkidu and Gilgamesh were hurt by someone or even by their own self. When they both experienced pain in their lives, it made them realize how perfect their lives were, and that you haven’t truly experience life or developed entirely until you have loved and lost something special to you. In Paul Tillich’s writing, â€Å"The Nature of Religion and Some Problems of Religious Language† talks about humans losing in a literal sense compared to the Bible and Gilgamesh talking in a literal sense. Tillich describes the loss of the dimension of depth in human lives and how it affects us as a person later on in life. Without depth in our life, the meaning of life and who we are becomes lost. Depth in life gives reason and meaning. Through out life though, depth becomes lost very quickly. When one tries to go through life and lives by the world, depth becomes farter and farther away. Tillich brings up religion multiple times in his writing about depth. He explains how religion isn’t one right or wrong answer, it is more of what is right for your life. Although a lot of people are thinking more in depth to their meaning of life, and do not think that any religions fit them entirely; so they become religious without actually having a religion. All religions and religious belief have been losing gradually their hold on the mind of man for the past couple of centuries. Religions, primitive or historical, are based on certain dogmas and contain a code of conduct and moral values. As matters of fact, with progress of civilisation and globalisation today, many primitive religions have been out of date simply because they failed survive against the revaluation and redistribution of the age-old values. (Londhe 1) Once someone has conformed themselves to the world and forgot about religion and depth in their life, he loses himself. Religion has almost become non-existent towards this generation, and if it is still in existence it is not taken seriously or the appropriate manner that it should. â€Å"When in this way man has deprived himself on the dimension of depth and the symbols expressing it, he then becomes a part of the horizontal plane. He loses his self and becomes a thing among things†¦He becomes an element in the process of manipulated production and manipulated consumption†¦ (Tillich) Religion is the reason many people are not living their lives to their full potentials and losing the dimension of depth. Without depth in life, life is essentially nothing. In conclusion, there are numerous takes on what it means to be human in this day and age. Primarily throughout the Bible, Gilgamesh, and Tillich the common theme that shows up is losing something or someone of value and importance. Without pain and suffering, is life even life? Whether a person believes in creation or Darwinism, death and loss Is an essential part to life that we cannot help. It is so usually fought off and prolonged, but it eventually catches up to us someday anyways. Works Cited Daniel Criswell, Ph. D. 2006. What Makes Us Human?. Acts Facts. 35 (1). Who Am I? Steps for Strong Time Management for College Students

Steps for Strong Time Management for College Students Within the first few days of starting college, many students quickly learn that managing their time is one of the most challenging and difficult aspects of being in school. With so much to do and keep track of, strong time management skills can make all the difference. Get and Use a Calendar It can be a paper calendar. It can be your cell phone. It can be a PDA. It can be a bullet journal. No matter what kind it is, though, make sure you have one. Write Down Everything Write down everything in one place. (Having multiple calendars just gives you more to do amidst an already tight schedule.) Schedule when you plan to sleep, when you are going to do your laundry, and when youre going to call your parents. The crazier your schedule gets, the more important this becomes. Schedule Time to Relax Dont forget to schedule in time to relax and breathe. Just because your calendar goes from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. doesnt mean you can. Keep Trying New Systems If your cell phone calendar isnt big enough, buy a paper one. If your paper one keeps getting torn, try a PDA. If you have too many things written down each day, try color-coding to help simplify. Very few college students make it through their programs without some kind of calendaring system; keep trying until you find one that works for you. Allow for Flexibility Things inevitably come up that you werent expecting. You may not have known that your roommates birthday is this week, and you certainly dont want to miss the celebrations! Leave room in your calendar so that you can move things around a little when needed. Plan Ahead Do you have a large research paper due the last week of the semester? Work backward in your calendar and figure out how much time you need to write it, how much time youll need to research it, and how much time youll need to pick your topic. If you think youll need six weeks for the entire project, work backward from the due date and schedule the time into your calendar before its too late. Plan for the Unexpected Sure, you just might be able to pull off two papers and a presentation during midterms week. But what happens if you catch the flu the night youre supposed to be pulling the all-nighter? Expect the unexpected so you dont have to spend more unplanned time trying to fix your mistakes. Schedule Rewards In Your midterms week is a nightmare, but it will all be over Friday by 2:30. Schedule a fun afternoon and a nice dinner out with some friends; your brain will need it, and you can relax knowing that youre not supposed to be doing anything else.

Essay Example These articles include Donald Antrims "He Knew", Ruth Prawer Jhabvalas "Aphrodisiac", and Nalini Joness "Tiger". In these articles, the setting has concentrated on a modernized world where even the parents are allowing their children to make decisions of their own without interference of dictation, as was the case in the past. In addition, the setting has been concentrated in countries in the developed world. The issues that the individuals go through are also specific to college age individuals. Therefore, the setting is a critical element in these narrative works because it is responsible for the establishment of a mental image, which is essential to understanding the message being passed by the author. Taking Ruth Prawer Jhabvalas â€Å"Aphrodisiac† into consideration, it is clear that the characters that the author has chosen are college students. This can be seen from the very first paragraph where the author reveals that university friends were discussing the novel that that would best fit the Indian context of lifestyle. Here, Kishen, the main character, suggests that the best novel that ought to fit the Indian context would incorporate the urban slum dwellers, indecently rich commerce and landless laborers. The author also shows that traditions are important to most societies and are always exhibited and observed when certain activities are done from the traditional perspective. For instance, in Aphrodisiac, the author makes it clear that the Indian culture observes its traditions by maintaining that while Kishen was away studying at Cambridge, his elder brother Shiv had got married in a traditional wedding. This creates an image in the audience’s minds of how t he scene of the marriage was and how the practices were performed. To show that this context was set in the modern world, Kishen went to the U.S to study there, which is what is currently happening as most

Terri Schiavo Court Cases Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Terri Schiavo Court Cases - Essay Example Many argue that it might have been, but then there were many arguments in this case. Not all of them were ethical or logical, and not all of them played out in court. The story of Terri Schiavo is so much more tragic than people stop to realize. When a situation is so easily preventable, how does it get so terribly out of hand, and how are even the most basic decisions of care handled? The bottom line, Terri Schiavo should have been alive today, and possibly even alive and well. Terri Schiavo suffered a cardiac arrest due to an eating disorder on February 25th, 1990. She was without oxygen for several minutes and then lapsed into a coma. Her coma then evolved into a Permanent Vegetative State. For fifteen years, she remained in that state, until her feeding tube was finally removed for the last time on March 18th, 2005. She died thirteen days later, ending a fifteen year battle with so many players, and yet so few concrete, satisfactory, answers (Quill, 2005). Terri Schiavo was in a Permanently Vegetative State, also known as PVS. While experts tried to argue that she was in a Minimally Conscious State (MCS), at her autopsy, it was confirmed that she had been in a PVS. The difference between the two conditions is slight. Those patients who are in a PVS are unaware of self and environment; they may make gestures, sounds, and eye movements. These behavior, however are involuntary. People in a MCS are aware of self and environment, but can only express it so much. They cannot speak, but their gestures, eye movements, and vocalizations are a deliberate attempt to communicate with those around them (Winslade, 2007). While Schiavo’s state was considered irreversible, there is much more that may have been learned from her had she survived. Studies have shown that some patients in a PVS can regain some level of consciousness. Some may live for decades in a PVS and begin to recover some consciousness. Simply put, it really is impossible to say

Blue Ocean Strategy Simulation

Blue Ocean Strategy Simulation The visual exploration at the start of Blue round 1 involved three different paths. Below is a summary of the findings of each of the path: Path 3: Looking Across the Chain of Buyers and Users It had the possibility of reaching upto 30% of market share. The main focus in this case would be on parents who dont want to intrude in their childrens personal lives by entering their room again and again but at the same time would like to control the time spent on gaming. The parents felt like they had lost control over what their children were doing. Many parents were also concerned with the easily snapping ability of discs because of which they had to buy their favourite discs twice or more. Most of the parents were also concerned about the cost and the environmental impact of batteries which were not rechargeable. There was also the issue of the cost of the games and maybe the answer lies in extending the length of the game to make it look like value for money. Finally, some people wanted the TV to store messages for their family members and wanted interconnectivity amongst the TVs for uninterrupted game play from anywhere inside the house. Two people also termed the game console as ugly. Possible Areas to work on: Control, Disc Protection, Rechargeable Batteries, Length and Complexity of the Games, Messages, Inter Connected Screens, Console Design. Path 1: Looking Across Alternatives The kids interviewed here mostly couldnt afford a video game and if given a choice, preferred another pair of shoes or a ball and wanted to move around the whole day with other kids after a whole day being still at school. The cost of the video games was a major issue with them. Also, many of them were ok with the quality of sound and graphics, which shows lack of interest in sophisticated devices. The exploration also led to an idea of mobile phones strapped to kids while they are playing so that the phones dont break after falling. For some of the kids who spent hundreds of dollars on sports goods, it was more a question of choice rather than affordability. Being with friends, and being active, not necessarily moving around was in. Possible Areas to work on: Cost, Sporty Mobile Phones, Fun Toys Path 5:   Looking Across the Functional and Emotional Appeal for Buyers The inherent thinking of these people about the video game industry was neutral to negative. They thought that video games are all about making people isolated, about technology and complexity. They also thought that games were about getting people together to socialize and have fun. These people were also quite intimidated by technology. This set of people also wanted the graphics, controller to be simpler. People also talked about the ugliness of the goods Possible Areas to work on: Simpler graphics, controls, easier games, proper training on using technology, creating games as a platform for socializing After discussing the various options available to us, we decided to launch blue box with the following specifications, the focus being on path 3 as it represented a major chunk- 30% of the target groups: We added controller sophistication and integrated screen and console design. We also reduced the audio sophistication as well as multimedia add-ons as there was less requirement of these features by the target group We also added rechargeable batteries, ability to control gaming habits as these were the major concerns of the people in path 3. Also, we included the additional feature with the ability to leave messages for others in the house. As a result of our decisions, we were able to attain a market share of 3.3% for the blue box. Thus, when coming up with a new product offering in an attempt to differentiate from our competitors, and in the process launching a blue ocean product, we decided to look across the chain of buyers and users and identified target groups, who when given special features suited to their requirements, will buy our product and it will be an offering distinct from industry standards. Application of Lessons Learnt to Quasar Media (Digital Media Agency) Blue Ocean Strategy Simulation taught us primarily to create a blue ocean for ourselves in order to differentiate from the competitors. The blue ocean involves offering something/ doing something/ making changes in the product which has not been done before and which makes your product stand out amongst all the products in the industry. The trick then also lies in sustaining that unique offering and continuously offering something extra. Quasar Media, a digital media agency, offers different services, a few of them being: Full service digital media solutions End-to-end services on Online Media, Search and Mobile marketing creative digital media search marketing and optimization E-CRM E-commerce Website development, back-end and optimization Interactive tools Mobile marketing Marketing Campaigns AoR Conceptualizing, developing, creating , hosting and managing digital assets. Social Media Optimization (SMO) Graphics Design Apps and Content Search Engine Marketing (SEM) Now, Quasar Media offers almost all of the services which are offered by a typical digital media agency in India. The time is right for the company to go that extra mile and differentiate from the competitors and create a blue ocean for themselves. Keeping into consideration the functional and emotional appeal of technology users in India, iPad is the next big thing. There is going to be an avalanche of sorts when the iPad comes into the market. Thus the high value differentiated product proposed is inclusion of iPad into the social media strategy. Inclusion of iPad into the Social Media Strategy: Including iPad into the social media strategy would primarily involve coming up with fresh Applications specific to iPad. IPad also supports multi tasking, in which many applications run simultaneously. Hence, living in the background is very important as you can be visible to the user, even when your application is in the background. Thus, this will become a competing factor beyond those on which the industry currently competes. Assignment No. 2 Let us start by looking at the nature of demand for bottled water in urban India. Unlike in the US, the water in the Indian home is not considered safe to be drunk directly. Almost all urban families use either an RO system, a candle filter or a big can of mineral water. Public places such as railway stations do not sound convincing even if they have water taps and in a way force people to purchase mineral water from there. In restaurants, since customers have no visible quality standard to know if their normal will be clean, they get ripped off paying double for mineral water. So, bottled water in India isnt catering to demand but is merely filling in for the lack of safe, clean water in our kitchen taps. Thats why bottled water in India is a Rs1, 000 crore industry growing at 40-50% annually. Parle was the first company in India to come up with bottled water and was in a way responsible for shaping up the bottled water industry in India. People today associate water with Bisleri and have in fact stopped calling it water and instead call it Bisleri only. But these days, there is increasing competition from international players like Coke, Pepsi, Nestle etc and national players like Mount Everest, Manikchand, and Kingfisher. The retail packaged water industry is growing at . Following are the factors which are fuelling this industry growth: Higher disposable income Increased on the go behaviour Importance of hygiene Increased Availability Affordable Price points In a scenario where there is no Genie in the bottle, the companies need to differentiate from the rest of the pack and need to create an uncontested space for themselves. The need of the hour is to create a high value, differentiated Blue Ocean Strategy product offering, which includes competing factors beyond those currently offered by the industry. Blue Ocean product Offering: Fruit Flavoured Water, Value added flavoured water like natural ayurvedic additive The rationale behind this Blue Ocean strategy is catering to the functional appeal and requirements of buyers. Essentially the customers are going to remain the same, but the modified product offering will cater to those who are tired of plain water or sweetened carbonated drinks. We all know that todays consumer is very health conscious. Hence, this health conscious consumer will be attracted towards water with fruit in it which gives it a healthier feel. The health conscious consumer will also be attracted towards the water with ayurvedic ingredient which is considered natural and is known to cure diseases. The factors of the industry that have been  eliminated  as they no longer have value Increasing awareness among people about consuming safe water which in turn increases demand Advertising only to the premium and elite class ( Today everyone consumes bottled water) The factors that have been  reduced  as they over serve customers Flashy packaging ( As it doesnt serve any purpose) Different bottle sizes (Based on the fact that if someone wants to buy a mineral water bottle, they go ahead and do it. They are not really particular about the size of the bottle) The factors that have been  raised  as they remove compromises that buyers are currently making Tamper proof packaging in the form of seals (Most of the consumers are scared of open or broken seals as many local water bottles are tampered) Sturdy and leak proof bottles Minerals and purification of the water The factors that have been  created  as they present new sources of customer value Fruit flavoured water ( For those who are tired of plain water or sweetened carbonated drinks) C:UsersManasDesktopWickyFruitEnergyKleinst.jpg Value added flavoured water with natural Ayurvedic additive (For those who are health conscious) C:UsersManasDesktopstock-photo-mineral-water-bottle-and-glass-with-mint-and-ice-rocks-10313494.jpg

Dickens Life Expressed Through Pip in Great Expectations...

Great Expectations was a novel written by Charles Dickens. It was first published in serial form from 1st December 1860 and then further on was released in book form in August 1861, although was previously issued by David Copperfield in 1849. This novel reworks his own childhood as a first-person narrative; Dickens was fortunate and had an advantage of writing Great Expectations due to him living in the Victorian times, and he related his life experiences with the main character of the play, ‘Pip’. Charles opened the play with the character Pip; his name was short for his Christian name Philip. In the Victorian times there were 3 different classes, these were known as the upper class, middle class and lower class. One of the things Charles Dickens tended to do in his career of writing was that he used interesting names characters in the story. As explained earlier the main character in the play is Pip, the reason he chose this name was because it symbolises a lot of different thoughts. If you think of a pip, the first impression that comes to mind is a seed, and a seed is a very small and fragile object and needs a lot of care to come into life and grow into a healthy plant. This describes exactly what a young child needs to grow and have a healthy life, just like Pip in the story. Furthermore in the story Pip is described as a ‘’small bundle of shivers’’, this shows that he has built up emotions of his memories in that past, suggesting that he didn’t have a very good childhood. The word small creates an impression that he was left behind and didn’t get much love or care in his childhood. The setting is in a graveyard, as it mentions in the story ‘’bleak place overgrown with nettles was the churchyard’’. This negative language creates a barren and colourless setting and nettles in particular are seen as unfavourable objects. ‘’overgrown with nettles’’ states that it was deceived and not looked after. In addition ‘’the dark flat wilderness’’ is used to describe the marshes part of the setting, this shows that it is dark there and it states that there is nobodyShow MoreRelatedSocial Class Of The Victorian Era1282 Words   |  6 Pagesduring the Victorian Era was Charles Dickens. A Serial Killer is a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive, and typically following a predictable behaviour pattern. They tend have a cooling off period, and their reason for killing usually is for a sexual component. They have to kill at least three to five people to be counted as serial.
